I’m reading George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” now. It’s the first part of a 7 part series. It’s dense. But it’s also pretty captivating. I’m about 200 pages in and really liking it which is somewhat strange because the plot is all “lead up.” Nothing has really happened, no magic, no dragons, no otherwordly beings (kind of) … much of what has gone on is more subtle conspiracy, politicking and detailing daily life.

I’d been off the fantasy kick for quite awhile with no solid reason to account for it – with the exception of trudging through Tad Williams’ “Shadowmarch” awhile back. But I’m liking this. Plus, HBO is turning it into their next miniseries.

Dude, you just committed to years of frustration as you wait for the final parts of the series… It’s such fun though – I couldn’t put it down. Mike and I read the first four last year. The fifth one has been in the works for ages and there’s still no sign of when it will be released. I think I’ll have to re-read the first four when it does come out as I’ve forgotten alot of the story.

    Everyone keeps telling me this.

I don’t really care … it’ll take me awhile to catch up but I’m OK with that.

Also, I think some of the delay has to do with his deep involvement with the HBO series.

I figure if I can digest the first two this summer, I’ll be in good shape. I have lots of things to read …

Agreed – its worth it. And honestly re-reading books like this makes me happy! I usually re-read the LOTR series and the Belgariad and others every few years. And I didn’t know about the HBO series – interesting. Enjoy.

One of the few fantasy series I’ve enjoyed enough to read, despite some of the fail. I’ll have to read from the beginning when (if!) the next book ever comes out.
