Eating in Chicago

So Mike and I will be in Chitown in late May – I have a conference on the 27/28 and if Beachwalk is happening the previous weekend we’ll come in early enough for that too. In any event, my birthday is the 26th and we thought we’d use it as an excuse to have a nice meal out. Thoughts? Suggestions? My initial thought was Tru. Alinea and Charlie Trotter’s are also options but are way more expensive. Other ideas? I know Terry & Laura have had some nice meals lately, right?

    Recently we’ve done

    * Custom House
    * Graham Elliott
    * Moto

    So scratch Moto immediately since it’s Alinea/Trotter’s pricing. And while it was good, clever, humorous and one-of-a-kind – it still couldn’t trump the meal we had @ Alinea a couple of years ago.

    Custom House was solid but pretty unspectacular and the mood was slightly too somber for me. I will say that it was the only time I was @ a restaurant where I seriously thought about asking for another order of roasted sweetbreads.

    Graham Elliott, in my opinion, delivered the best value and vibe. I mean where else can you hear Band of Horses/Jawbreaker/Sunny Day Real Estate on the house speakers and munch on Parmesean/Black Pepper/Truffle Oil popcorn?

    I’d like to give the Publican a try – but I think that would be better suited with a large group of people. I will concede that there’s something about Kahan that I don’t get – even though I loved his run @ erwin many, many, many years ago.

    Von said they were planning on it. We’re definitely up for it. How about you? When are due?

    And thanks T – those all look like good options.

    Yes, I want Beachwalk to happen. Will circulate an email. But, C, do you mean that you could do Beachwalk May 22/23 or 29/30? (You write that you have “a conference on the 27/28 and if Beachwalk is happening the previous weekend” – did you mean “following weekend”?)

    I liked Moto. I thought it was a really fun to have your eye ans your mouth disagree on what you were eating.

    Trotters- Go to say you went.

    Custom House is solid, not spectacular. It is my “go to” place in the winter. A little heavy for warmer weather.

    Graham Elliott was OK. The food was good, but the vibe kind of sucked for me. Granted, it was after the Top Chef thing; but poser central.

    I haven’t been to Alinea yet. Waiting for a special night.

    Publican is great!! It is good for 2-4 people because of the echoes and sound. Great homage to pig and beer. Problem is, you don’t drink beer. Mado does the pig too and it is BYO. V Fike, Burke, Von, and I had a great meal there.

    Nightwood is a little out of the way, but really good new spot. I think it won an award in Time Out for 2009. If you don’t do dinner there, we can do brunch!!

    Also check out L2O. It is very similar to Le Bernardin with what they do with seafood. Owned by the same group as Tru.

    Tru is still my gold standard in dining. Since it is your 30th birthday…go for it.

    I’m down with Beachwalk depending on work schedule.
