News + Advice

So as some of you probably saw from Facebook, I quit my job on Monday. I’m very excited - I’m going to spend the next 7/8 months focusing on my dissertation before I start clerking in September/October.

This leads to the quest for advice. I never owned a mobile phone until I started this job when I got a blackberry. They are going to let me keep my number but I need to get a new phone and figure out who to go with. Help! What should I do? I kind of want an iPhone but am not sure what the monthly costs are. Do you have to get a data plan to utilize all the apps etc. What other phones do people have? I know Thierry and Becky just got the google phones – how does that work? Any advice is appreciated.

    L. and I have iPhones and I think we like them for very different reasons. For me, it allows me VPN access to systems, a nice browser, an actual terminal/shell if needed and the 3GS is speedy. That said, I’m not in love with the keyboard, but I don’t use it for emails primarily.

It’s pricey – and potentially – for you – not worth the expense.

I nixed the iphone based on keyboard alone. Cool interface, cool apps, but not for me. I’m always typing.

I have friends who love the new HTC phones, and I’m pretty sure that some run Android.

    Who are you clerking for?

I have a storm. Wouldnt get it again. And each time I drop it I hope it wont work. going to get a regular blackberry next phone.

I have Verizon. pay a total of $80 a month. Get some talking time, some texts, and unlimited bandwidth. If you want to see what their coverage is they’ve got a map for that.

Thanks peeps. I had Verizon before and now have Sprint, which is fine in NY but I know can be bad elsewhere. I think I should probably just get something simple and wean myself off instant email access… but I like it… but I don’t have much of an income anymore – adjuncting pays really badly. And Jeff, I’m clerking for Magistrate Judge James Orenstein in the EDNY.

i have a BB Curve, the 8830. had it for a few years now and it has everything i need. full QWERTY keyboard WITH a keypad, audio, camera, internet….although using Opera is cool and all, it’s not ideal but gets the job done. my phone bill is around $100/month for unlimited text/data and 900 minutes.

The G1 is pretty good. It has a good interface with the option of touchscreen and buttons, but some annoying features when it comes to apps. No Adobe. You are going to miss some things about the Crackberry, but you’ll adapt. Burke had the new touch, but I’m not sure if he’s thrilled with it.
