It seems no one is doing anything new. Retread music and movies is the biggest thing. This, I like!!
P.O.S. (the rapper) is an extraordinary talent. Highly recommend that you seek out some of his original stuff. (Far as I know, he remains Pitchfork-undiscovered.)
Just a taste to support my claim that POS is worth yr time. The following comes off his most recent album …. it’s rare for someone to (1) make a political song that doesn’t sound like crap and (2) work in a high percentage high-quality references:
POS steadily wreck it for anybody who raps
or naps on facts
fill the in line six to End Hits
the oval office and the lobby
probably listen to Fugazi singin’
this ones ours lets take another
this ones ours lets take another/ x2
Then they dance away clean like
This comes after nods to A.C. Slater and the class-A line “Prada dead guilty as any internet thread.” And it’s only one freakin’ song.
von, i like how you are picking almost every artist i’ve been talking about for a while now. i just saw P.O.S. last month. my friend Jen in DC is pretty good friends with the whole Rhymesayers crew (that’s their label) and she turned me on to him a few years ago. definitely check out his first album, Audition. Never Better is an AMAZING album, i love Goodbye, Savion Glover, Purexed, Low Light Low Life, Graves, and Optimist.
Stef is lyrically ahead of the game…
So fuck it back to the wall
crush it laugh at em all
hush/ let em try to find the beauty in your face
something more than a song
they hatin? Aw come on
dust let em try to find the beauty in the bassline
aw but then them words dont change
we wont sing with what will fade away
yeah we do our own damn thing
we dont blink at what tomorrow might bring (at all)
here’s a pic from the show…
TPep, I never claimed to be only or first; only, best. ;-)
LOL! well played, sir.
perhaps you and i should participate in the ancient japanese ritual of KARAOKE to some new-school hip-hop come Beachwalk this may!
By the way, TPep: Agreed with your list, but I’d add “The Brave and The Snake”. Got a little Death Cab/Narrow Stairs/I will possess etc. (stylistically – not substantive) on the intro, with a deserved Fugazi whiplash.
