Passport Saga

So it’s been a nightmare trying to get James’ passport but I finally have it in my hands.  First of all, the hospital messed up and he got a birth certificate but not a social security number.  I had to go to the SSA office and apply for one which was fine except they said I would get it in 3-4 weeks but of course it never arrived.  I wasn’t able to get a status check over the phone – the national number told me I had to call the local office number but no-one ever answered the phone so I had to go back to the local office.  There was no good explanation given for the delay but they said I’d have it in a week or so and I finally got it.

By then it was late November and I was getting antsy so we did the passport express application at the post-office and paid extra to expedite it.  They said it would take two weeks – we got his birth certificate back but no passport.  When I called to check on it on Monday, they said it had been mailed on November 26!  Gotta love the USPS!  Anyway, they said I had to go the passport office and bring James with me – this was down near work so I went this morning at 7:30, got a receipt and then brought James to work (where he behaved very well).

Went back to the office this afternoon to pick up the passport but they wouldn’t give it to me because I had no proof I was his mother!  They told me to go find the person who had helped me this morning (i.e. random woman behing glass screen) to get proof.  Ended up having to get a supervisor who really didn’t check anything but signed the slip so we finally got the passport.  What a nightmare.

Looking forward to our trip though.  We leave on Saturday night for Ireland and are there for a week before we head to Spain for a week and then go back to Ireland until the 31st.

The “no proof of motherhood” is a good one.

What exactly would you present, the birth video?
