my 5 seconds on television…

so, jessica called me last night before I headed out to the Explosions in the Sky show with t & bjurk, and said her Dad saw me on the news last night. Hilarious, right? well, I found the clip this morning on the ABC website:

Keep an eye out at the 1:11 mark and check out the label under my name…

Your faith in the CTA is disturbing, young taxpayer.

Also: that you’re no longer a “young” taxpayer is disturbing. Because what does that make me?

Addendum: Or, heaven forfend, what does that make The Young Tobias, who is older than us all?

    OK, plug #2:

I tried; I fought vainly; I resisted to the upmost.

    But.

In a moment of weakness, distracted by the imminent purchase of a Misfits’ CD and struggling to recall the name of a band that Terry had suggested I check out, I grazed the new music section at my local independent record store. And there it was. Vampire Weekend. I had heard some of the buzz a bit ago and a snippet from a song or two, but had decided to resist this next purchase.

    Except: this time I didn’t.

If you have not purchased this CD, you need to. It’s the catchiest collegiate crap that I’ve heard in the last couple years. It’s as if The Shins got They Might Be Giants drunk and began making sweet, sweet love to them – but, mid-coitus, started to lose their interest. Desperate to continue, The Shins locked on to a fantasy about Paul McCartney getting it on with Yoko Ono. Thereby bolstered, The Shins finished the job to everyone’s mind-blowing satisfaction.

Yes, it’s Shins getting-it-on with They Might be Giants good. It’s McCartney-screwing-Ono good. It’s John Lennon cuckholded good. It’s just plain good.

My apologies if I’m the last person on this blog to have recognized it, but I have now played the entire album through three times in a row this morning, and it’s not even 9 a.m. Yesterday, I drove around listening to the same song – “Oxford Comma” – four times in a row. It took me an entire day to get past the first four songs on the disk, because I kept hitting replay. I haven’t enjoyed an album this much since Arcade Fire and, before that, Jawbreaker and Pink Floyd.

It’s a really good disk. It’s an even better disk to listen to when you’re doing something else.

Back when I was going to be a writer, I had U2′s Joshua Tree on continuous loop when I drafted the middle three the chapters of my first novel. (As always, the middle of anything is the toughest.) U2′s JT created a mood without being distracting. It propelled the writing forward.

Now, as a lawyer,* I’ve just polished off twenty pages of a brief in six hours with VW in the background. It is similarly excellent; the words just flow.

Well you’re certainly not the last person to have listened to them – this is the first I’ve heard of them but you’ve definitely convinced me to check them out. I’m currently listening to a lot of Metallica but think it might be worth exposing the foetus to some new beats… I wonder how much he hears when I listen to music through headphones…

Oh, and I know fetus can be spelt in a couple of ways and that foetus is not one of them, but Mike likes to pronounces it “fo-eetus” and therefore I’ve become accustomed to doing that too.

ok – last post, apparently there are a zillion ways to spell that word and foetus is one of them, at least in England…

My high school boyfriend and I had a competition in which we could only talk about bands if we could pronounce their names backwards. Acillatem and Stifsim were two of our favorites. Which is why this particular post is so nostalgic for me.

I just read about Vampire Weekened in the paper this weekend and thoiught about getting the album. Thanks Von.

Yeah, I saw that. Not surprising that they’re unpolished. It’ll be interesting to see if this is a one-time good album or something more.

That said, they pretty much captured my current feelings as a young partner in a law firm with their song about “the pin-striped men of morning” –
